3- There are established hours for meals
While there are some modest variations in mealtimes, most Italians eat supper between 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. and lunch between 1 and 2:30 a.m. The kitchen will often be closed from 2:30 to 3 p.m. till 7 or 7:30 p.m. many restaurants will open for lunch around 12:30 or 1 p.m. Restaurants that start serving supper before seven o’clock are targeting travelers. Never expect to be able to settle down for a late lunch or an early dinner in tiny cities and villages. You can order a sandwich in a bar if you’re hungry in between meals.
4- Making reservations is necessary
Restaurants aren’t in the business of shifting tables since meals often last two to three hours in the afternoon and evening. Making a reservation is crucial, especially in popular locations where there is a strong demand and a limited supply of seats.
Additionally, Italian waiters won’t bring you the bill unless you want it. It would be impolite to rush you out when you’re enjoying the company of family or friends because meals are considered social activity. With a few exceptions, the personnel at the restaurant will effectively hold your table for you until closing time if you make a reservation for 8:30 p.m. Even if you ask to sit at one of the numerous unoccupied tables you see at an Italian restaurant at 7:30 or even 8 p.m., you could still be denied service since those tables have reservations.
